Reardon Auditorium - 1100 East 5th Street, Anderson, IN, USA
En Pointe Indiana Ballet presents The Adventures in Alice in Wonderland. Come let us take you into the curious world of Alice's imagination as she encounters interesting and enlightening characters along the way.
“Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?” That depends a good deal on where you want to get to,” said the Cat. “I don’t much care where—” said Alice. “Then it doesn’t matter which way you go,” said the Cat.“ — so long as I get somewhere,” Alice added as an explanation. “Oh, you’re sure to do that,” said the Cat, “if you only walk long enough.”
If you want our advice, we think you should enjoy a cup of tea and join us for this wonderfully wonderful performance. Get your tickets today because this "curiouser and curiouser" full length ballet will be sure to have you smiling as big as the Cheshire cat.
Act I, Alice falls asleep in the park while reading a boring book without any pictures. As she dozes off, she sees a hurried and worrisome rabbit. She follows him into his briar and accidentally falls down into a world that doesn't make much sense. She gets stuck in a corridor of doors where she is too big and too small to fit through the doors. Poor Alice becomes so frustrated she cries until she created a pool of tear. She encounters a mouse and a funny dodo bird that helps to start a caucus race to nowhere. After all, however will everyone dry off? During this race the white rabbit loses his glove so they all begin to help him look for it. Alice gets separated from everyone and meets a mesmerizing caterpillar. He offers her a mushroom that causes her to change from big to small. Little Alice runs off into a a garden of living flowers. This garden is near the Duchess' house where she sees the Duchess finds out the Duchess has been invited to the Queen's palace for a game of croquet. It is here where Alice meets a sneaky and unhelpful house cat. He points her to the direction of the Hatter and the opposite direction towards the March Hare. But, she is flustered as she has no idea where she is nor where she is going.
Let us entertain you as we fall down the rabbit hole into a peculiar wonderland full of surprises at every turn.
“In that direction,” the Cat said, waving its right paw round, “lives a Hatter: and in that direction,” waving the other paw, “lives a March Hare. Visit either you like: they’re both mad.” “But I don’t want to go among mad people,” Alice remarked. “Oh, you can’t help that,” said the Cat: “we’re all mad here. I’m mad. You’re mad.” “How do you know I’m mad?” said Alice. “You must be,” said the Cat, “or you wouldn’t have come here.”
Act II, you will encounter a fanfare parade for the very boisterous and demanding Queen of Hearts. She challenges Alice to a game of croquet that turns out to be quite lopsided and impossible to win as a flamboyance of flamingos and loyal soldiers rig the game in the Queen's favor. The characters come together for a party at the Queen's home where they entertain themselves with a high-spirited flamboyant waltz. Meanwhile one of the Queen's tarts goes missing and the Queen unleashes her fury onto the Knave. Her temper rages so much so that she calls for his execution. Alice is upset by this and comes to his defense. The Duchess steps in as the peacemaker and takes her to the seashore. While by the sea she meets a griffin and a sad mock turtle that is part cow part turtle. The lobsters dance with other sea creatures and Alice gets tired. As she falls asleep she dreams of dancing with the Knave, but it abruptly awakened at his jury trial. You will soon find that the Knave is not the thief during this vibrant and dramatic second act. In fact, Alice is called as a witness and realizes that nothing is normal and realizes all things have been ridiculous. She becomes agitated and begins to challenge the Queen face to face. Everything around her becomes a whirlwind and she wakes up at the riverbank where it all began.
Artistic Directors Pollyana Ribeiro and Robert Moore are using the elegance of ballet to translate this imaginary world into a beautiful and quizzical work of art. It is certainly a performance that everyone in the family will enjoy!
